Smart International Shipping: Bringing Your Belongings to The Netherlands

When relocating to The Netherlands, deciding what to bring along can be as crucial as how to bring it. At Expats Relocation, BV, we understand the complexities and nuances of international shipping. This guide will help you determine what is and isn’t practical to bring to Holland, highlighting the significant tax advantages, including the exemption on import taxes for personal goods and vehicles.

What to Bring:

  • Essentials vs. Non-Essentials: Evaluate what you truly need. While personal items like clothing, essential personal electronics, and sentimental belongings are a must, consider the availability and cost of items in The Netherlands before deciding to ship larger goods.

  • Know that European voltages are different than the USA.  Televisions, Washer/Dryer and other larger appliances will not work in Europe without expensive voltage converters... leave this stuff behind.

  • Massive Tax Advantage on Vehicles: One of the most significant benefits of moving to The Netherlands is the absence of import taxes on personal goods (and vehicles.) Given the high taxes on vehicle sales in The Netherlands, a car worth $20,000 in the USA could be valued over €50,000 here, making it financially advantageous and worth the cost to bring your vehicle along.

Shipping Options:

  • Checked Luggage on Airplane: Ideal for immediate essentials. This option is best for items you need upon arrival, like clothing and necessities.

  • Palletized Air Freight: For heavier items not suitable for checked luggage but needed relatively quickly, palletized air freight is a faster, albeit more expensive, option.

  • Container Shipping via Sea: The most cost-effective method for large shipments, like furniture or vehicles. However, it's important to plan for a 6-8 week transit time.  This long lead time might be better spent shopping for new furniture in your new Dutch home vs. waiting for your things from the USA.  We will discuss this in our initial call.

  • Customized Shipping Plans: We assist in creating a shipping plan tailored to your needs, considering factors like time, budget, and the nature of goods.

  • Handling Documentation and Legalities: We manage the bureaucratic aspects of international shipping, ensuring a (as much as possible) hassle-free process.

  • Support with Tax Exemptions: Our expertise in Dutch tax laws ensures you benefit from tax exemptions, significantly reducing the cost of moving your belongings and vehicles.

With our guidance at Expats Relocation, BV, you can bring your cherished belongings and vehicles without the burden of hefty import taxes. Let us help you navigate the best options for international shipping, making your transition to Dutch life as smooth and cost-effective as possible.
